ADOPT A YORKIE Before You Apply Thank you for considering adopting a rescued Yorkie or other small dog from Yorkie Rescue Houston (YRH). Every dog in our rescue deserves a safe, stable, loving home that is appropriate for that individual dog's needs. Our adoption process is designed to help us determine whether your household and the dog you are interested in are a good match. Please read the following requirements before submitting an application.
ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS To be considered for adoption, you must: 1. Be at least 18 years old. 2. Be local to the Houston metropolitan area—or be willing to personally come to Houston to transport your adopted dog home. We do not ship dogs. 3. Provide identification showing your current address. 4. Have the knowledge and consent of all adults living in your household. 5. If you currently own pets, you must have a consistent, positive veterinary history. This includes appropriate vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention. YRH requires documentation demonstrating responsible and consistent veterinary care and parasite prevention. 6. Be prepared to provide the time, attention, financial resources, veterinary care, training, and lifelong commitment necessary to care for your adopted dog. 7. Understand that companionship and human interaction are essential. What a rescued dog needs most is time, patience, and companionship. 8. Keep your dog indoors. YRH dogs are companion animals and must be kept indoors as members of the family. Dogs may not be chained, tethered, or otherwise confined outside. 9. Children and puppies Small puppies will not be adopted to households with children under 5 years of age. 10. Applicants age 65 and older If you are 65 or older, please read our Senior Adopter Policy before applying. [READ THE SENIOR ADOPTER POLICY] Senior applicants must use the appropriate Senior Adopter Application. 11. Be prepared to follow YRH's adoption contract. If circumstances ever change and you can no longer care for your adopted dog, you agree to contact Yorkie Rescue Houston regarding the dog's future. HOMEOWNER OR RENTER? The application you need depends on your housing situation. HOMEOWNER If you own your home, please complete the Homeowner Adoption Application. RENTER If you rent your home, please complete the Renter Adoption Application. Renters are required to provide information about their landlord and documentation of the property's pet policy. Your application cannot be properly evaluated without the required rental and pet-policy information. OUR ADOPTION DECISIONS YRH reserves the right to approve or deny any application. Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption of a particular dog. We do not select homes simply on a first-come, first-served basis. Each dog is an individual, and placement decisions are based on that dog's specific needs, temperament, medical requirements, lifestyle requirements, and long-term welfare. Our responsibility is to determine which available home is the best match for each individual dog. Another applicant may be selected even when an applicant meets all of our basic requirements. ADOPTION FEES Our adoption fee varies by dog and is listed on each dog's individual profile. The amount shown on the dog's current profile supersedes any different amount that may appear elsewhere on the website. Adoption donations are payable by cash or electronic payment via Venmo or Zelle, as specified by YRH.
