Fostering vs. Adopting: Please Read Before Applying

At Yorkie Rescue Houston, fostering and adopting serve two distinct purposes within our rescue mission. Understanding the difference ensures clear expectations and successful placements.

Fostering is a temporary commitment.
Foster homes provide daily care, structure, safety, and affection while the dog awaits an approved adoptive family. Fosters are expected to support the adoption process and relinquish the dog when an approved applicant is selected.  The rescue maintains ownership and financial responsibility during the foster period.

Fostering is not a pre-adoption arrangement or a means to secure a specific dog. Those who wish to keep the dog permanently should apply as adopters.

Adoption is permanent.
Approved adopters complete our screening process, are formally matched with a dog, and assume lifelong responsibility under contract.

Fosters make rescue possible.
Adopters provide forever homes.
Both are essential — and clearly defined.

In some instances, a dog may be offered 'Foster-to-Adopt'  This option is typically ONLY available for dogs who have not yet completed their medical treatments, i.e., Heartworm treatment, or recovery from surgery.  Young puppies too young to be spayed/neutered may also be offered on FTA basis.
